what exactly is a buleria? I know its a Spanish tradition related to flamenco and the root of the mariachi but
is it strictly spanish?Are they still done in LAtin America? Or is it strictly done in Spain. Is it only the purest / traditional form that is practiced in Spain? Are there off shoots?
and, whats that wierd cry/ wail singing that they do. What's the proper name for it?
sorry, not weird. That was insensitive I apologize. It's just an unfamiliar form of singing to me. It's quite beautiful.
It is a type of flamenco music, not a Spanish "tradition." It's Spanish, not South American, but could be performed anywhere. In can involve guitar, singing, and dancing.
The music has a 12-beat "compas," or rhythmic unit of measure, with the accents on the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th beats. (Count to 12 and clap on those beats and you'll get a sense of the rhythm.) Accompanying bulerias with "palmas" (hand-clapping) is often done on the 3rd, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 12th beats.
Ok, so that probably doesn't help much. You have to hear it. All the great flamenco guitarists play bulerias -- Moraito, Paco de Lucia, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, and countless others. It's very exciting music to listen to, and rythmically complex.
By the way, people often speak of bulerias in the plural. You could say "he played bulerias last night," even if he only played one song. This is because the plural is taken from "por bulerias," or "in the style of bulerias."
