Do the clips on garters clip to all types of stockings?

I just bought an outfit for my boyfriend's valentine's day present, and it comes with the whole corset/ garter deal. But it doesn't come with stockings and I've never worn anything like this before, so do the clips on the garter just clip to normal stockings or do I need to get stockings that have something the clips clip to?

normal stockings will be fine
some come with a hold up sticky tape on the inside- the clips will not fasten properly to this type as the sticky gets in the way.
